Window dressings

"I need to replace my current window shades, and I don't know where to start." This is a common refrain I hear from clients and friends. In this video I explain that there are a few main factors that constantly repeat themselves when answering this question, so I am sharing a summary of a design consultation with you! I ask my client questions in order to get them to think about what they want from their window treatment.

  1. Which room are we focusing on first?

Every room has its own form and function, and we choose shades, blinds, or curtains that flow accordingly.

  2. What is the goal of the window treatment in this room?

Roller shades and roman shades provide full coverage and have the option of adding light blocking or light filtering backing. Zebra shades are a 2-layer shade that act like blinds, in that they allow light to enter a room when opened slightly. Curtains can add an extra layer of sun block, or alone on a window in a light filtering version, can allow light to enter a room while maintaining privacy.

  3. Do you want the window treatment to make a statement or blend in?

In a nursery, office building, daycare, playroom, and sometimes bedrooms, window treatments can act as a focal point in a room, add texture and pattern, and make a statement. You can custom print a pattern or decal on a roller shade. I have installed many patterned curtains, from plaids to birds to simple linens, especially in home rentals when adding wallpaper isn't an option.

Custom window treatments vs DIY

There are many advantages to hiring a company to take care of your windows:

  1. Bring sample books to your house

  2. Custom design

  3. Measure

  4. Warranty

This route can be more costly and can take longer on delivery than ordering standard option online. But if you have both the time and budget, reach out to a vendor I trust:

DIY

If you know what blind or shade or curtain you want for your standard size window, online shopping can be a great option. I often purchase curtains, rods, cordless zebra shades, faux wood slats on Amazon or Lowe's. Color options are very limited online, and the quality won't match a custom shade company.
